On November 20, 2024, Amazon announced that they are changing the prices for AWS Cognito.
The new prices will be effective starting December 1, 2024.

They also introduced a new pricing tier structure.
The old structure was the Free tier and the Advanced tier.
The new structure is the Essentials tier, the Lite tier, and the Pro tier.
Essentials looks to map to the old Free tier, and Lite looks to map to the old Advanced tier.

Existing users with active MAUs before November 20. seems to be able to keep their prices until November 30, 2025.

The old prices for Cognito were as follows:

“Free Tier”:
Up to 50.000 MAU was free.
After that, the price was $0.0055 per MAU.

The new prices are as follows:

“Essentials Tier” (comparable to old Free Tier)
Up to 10.000 MAU is free.
After that, the price is $0.015 per MAU.
Almost 3 times more expensive than the old Free Tier.

The new “Lite Tier” is comparable to the old Advanced Tier it seems, the prices seem to not be changed much here, but you have to consider that the free mau is only 10k and not 50k now, and that the price for the first 10k is more expensive.

Will this lead to SaaS authentications providers that use AWS Cognito under the hood to increase their prices?

In our calculator the prices for the old compared to the new Free/Essentials tier is changed significantly.

The old price for 50.000 MAU was $0.
The new price for 50.000 MAU is $600.

The old price for 100.000 MAU was $275.
The new price for 100.000 MAU is $1.350.
