Amazon changed the prices for AWS Cognito

Published at Nov 26, 2024

On November 20, 2024, Amazon announced that they are changing the prices for AWS Cognito.
The new prices will be effective starting December 1, 2024.

Edit: Nov. 27. I got the lite and essentials tier mixed up, I have corrected this now, both in this blogpost and in the calculator.

They also introduced a new pricing tier structure.

The old structure was the Free tier and the Advanced tier.
The new structure is the Essentials tier, the Lite tier, and the Pro tier.
Lite looks to map to the old Free tier, and Essentials looks to map to the old Advanced tier.
The Pro tier is a new tier that is more expensive than the Essentials tier, and with new features.

Existing users with active MAUs before November 20. seems to be able to keep their prices until November 30, 2025.

The old prices for Cognito were as follows:

“Free Tier”:
Up to 50.000 MAU was free.
After that, the price was $0.0055 per MAU.

The new prices are as follows:

“Lite Tier” (comparable to old Basic Tier)
Up to 10.000 MAU is free.
After that, the price is $0.0055 per MAU up to 100.000 MAU.
Then the price is $0.0046 per MAU up to 1.000.000 MAU.

“Essentials Tier” (comparable to old Advanced Tier)
Up to 10.000 MAU is free.
After that, the price is $0.015 per MAU.

The new “Essentials Tier” is comparable to the old Advanced Tier it seems, the prices seem to have gone down a bit here, but you have to consider that the free mau is only 10k and not 50k now.

Will this lead to SaaS authentications providers that use AWS Cognito under the hood to increase their prices?

In our calculator the prices for the old compared to the new Free/Lite tier is changed significantly:

The old price for 15.000 MAU was $0.
The new price for 15.000 MAU is $28.

The old price for 50.000 MAU was $0.
The new price for 50.000 MAU is $220.

The old price for 60.000 MAU was $55.
The new price for 60.000 MAU is $275.

The old price for 100.000 MAU was $275.
The new price for 100.000 MAU is $495.
